PROCESS SUPPORT & EVALUATION

CHEMISTRY LAB

In addition to routine analysis and troubleshooting, the Chemistry Lab also evaluates new processes on the market for cost and performance to assure leading edge capability. New processes are evaluated for their environmental friendliness. Another important function of the lab is the optimization of existing processes to meet the specific requirements of the customer. The lab often works with vendors to find solutions to problems. Should the need arise, the lab can, with engineering, design complete new lines to run specialty parts.

The Surtronics Chemistry Lab is fully equipped to maintain all process tanks and monitor performance of the wastewater pretreatment program. The lab is certified by the State of North Carolina for metals, cyanide, phosphate, and pH analysis. The lab is managed by a degreed chemist and has two additional staff members. Lab personnel have a total of four to five years experience in the plating industry.

In addition to full wet chemistry analysis capability, the lab has a Hach spectrophotometer and a Perkin Elmer Model AA400 Atomic Absorption Unit which assists Surtronics both with its compliance with local, state, and federal waste water regulations and with testing for contaminants in plating baths. This allows Surtronics to keep our plating baths up to the highest quality standards.  Surtronics has lamps to test for Cadmium, Zinc, Silver, Nickel, Iron, and Chrome. The lab also includes a cyanide distillation setup, sophisticated pH, ORP, selective ion probe capability, and Mettler Analytical Balance. A multiple Hull cell setup permits precise control of plating additives. All process lab work is documented using proprietary software that maintains a database of all lab analyses and bath requirements of the permitting authority.
